Hans Mertens, M.Sc. Dutch and European Patent Attorney EP&C - Amsterdam

Hans Mertens studeerde elektrotechniek in Delft, en is sinds 1988 aan EP&C verbonden als octrooigemachtigde. Daarvoor werkte hij als ontwikkelingsingenieur bij een transformatorenfabriek (Smit Transformatoren te Nijmegen). Hans is lid van FICPI, AIPPI, UNION en LES. Hij is lid van commissie CET 7 van FICPI (computer implemented inventions). Ook is hij kopman van de Nederlandse Groep, en Nederlands gedelegeerde voor het Executive Committee van UNION. Hans is binnen EP&C verantwoordelijk voor de contacten in Europa en Japan.

Hans is een rustige en betrouwbare meedenker met een scherp oog voor strategie. “In ons vak moet je de techniek beheersen, maar ook alle procedures op een voordelige manier benutten. Het is een kwestie van aanvoelen wanneer je heel scherp of juist heel breed moet formuleren. Daarbij moet je de wens van je cliënt zo goed begrijpen, dat je bij voorbaat bestand bent tegen uiteenlopende toekomstscenario’s.”

Career:

Hans Mertens studied electrical engineering in Delft, the Netherlands, and has been a patent attorney with EP&C since 1988. Previously he worked as a development engineer for a transformer factory (Smit Transformers, Nijgemegen). Hans is currently a member of FICPI, AIPPI, UNION and LES (international IP-organisations). He is also the chairman of the Dutch Group, and Dutch delegate for the Executive Committee of UNION. At EP&C Hans is responsible for Japan and Europe.

Hans is a calm and reliable team player with a sharp eye for strategy. “In our profession you have to master the engineering side, but also take advantage of the procedures. You need to feel when to formulate very clearly or, on the contrary, very broad. In this context you have to understand the client’s wish to such an extent that you prepared for different future scenarios in advance.”
