Gerben de Bruijn studeerde Slagwerk Jazz aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag. Tijdens zijn carrière als beroepsdrummer heeft hij Rechten gestudeerd aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Hierna ging hij aan de slag als advocaat op het gebied van intellectuele eigendom. Vervolgens was hij merkengemachtigde bij een octrooibureau en bedrijfsjurist bij Shell. Ook gaf hij IE-cursussen bij de Kamer van Koophandel. Sinds 2010 is hij aan EP&C verbonden als merkengemachtigde/jurist.

Gerben is erg positief van aard, maar loopt niet weg van een juridische strijd. Laagdrempeligheid vindt hij belangrijk in het contact met de cliënt en dat bewerkstelligt hij met humor. Hij houdt van de passie waarmee uitvinders praten over hun vinding. “Daar herken ik veel van mezelf in. Als muzikant weet ik hoe het is om iets te scheppen. Maar ik ken ook het belang van zaken vastleggen. Ik kan dan ook met dezelfde bevlogenheid als de cliënt mijn advies uitbrengen. Cliënten zitten zo diep in hun eigen product of merk dat het voor een buitenstaander soms moeilijk te begrijpen is. Ik probeer een zo breed mogelijke context te krijgen, om de bescherming van het merk, het model of het octrooi zo goed en helder mogelijk in beeld te krijgen. Voor een bescherming waar muziek in zit!”

Gerben de Bruijn studied jazz drums at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. While pursuing a career as a professional drummer, he studied law at the University of Amsterdam. He went on to become a lawyer, specialised in the field of intellectual property, later working as a trademark attorney at a private practice patent and trade mark office and corporate lawyer at Shell. He also taught courses in IP at the national Chamber of Commerce. He joined EP&C as a trademark attorney/lawyer in 2010.

Gerben takes a very positive approach to life, but is not afraid of legal disputes. He wants his clients to feel that he is approachable, which he is, thanks to his sense of humour. He loves hearing inventors talking about their projects with such passion. “That appeals to me on a personal level – as a musician, I know how it feels to create something yourself. But I also know how important it is to protect things. I make my recommendations with the same level of enthusiasm as the client. Sometimes, clients are so deeply involved with their own product or brand that it can be difficult for an outsider to comprehend. I try to get as broad an understanding of the context as possible, so that I can get the best and clearest picture possible of the protection the brand, design or patent requires. The resulting protection is music to my clients ears!”
