(electronics, 1997)
- Dutch patent attorney (2006)
Career
After graduating in the field of modelling and
characterization of self-pulsating visible light laser diodes (in 1997),
Steven joined the Digital Design & Test department of Philips Research
Laboratories in Eindhoven. The first years he was mainly involved in
exploration (and comparison) of state-of-the art deep-submicron CMOS
technologies (0.35µm, 0.25µm, 0.18µm, 0.12µm). He looked at issues, like
timing, power en area and how they scale. Quickly, he got also involved
in the design and characterization of test structures in
state-of-the-art CMOS technologies. Later on, he specialized in the
exploration and simulation of physical/electrical aspects in CMOS
technologies (cross-talk, EMC, supply bounce, etc).
In 2003, Steven switched to the field of Intellectual Property. He
entered the Philips Patent department, passed his exams for Dutch patent
attorney qualification in 2005, and specialized in various technologies,
like embedded memory technology, interconnect technology, and MEMS
technology. He dealt with a large variety of technology inventions, but
generally the inventions related to how small structures (transistors,
interconnect) are made using a clever sequence of various different
processing techniques like deposition, lithography, (selective) etching,
implantation, etc. Next to patent creation and prosecution, he also
managed various IPR issues in these fields. This included counselling
the business groups covering these areas, managing the portfolio in
these areas (in terms of creation, prosecution, and maintenance), and
doing acquisition of invention disclosures by having
discussions/brainstorm sessions with inventors. Further, he got involved
in patent assertion work, wherein he had to act in several cases with
respect to third parties who considered Philips products to infringe
their patents. He did this work both in the semiconductor field as well
as in the consumer electronics field.
From September 2006 to December 2006 Steven worked in the IP department
of the divested Semiconductor division of Philips, NXP Semiconductors.
His activities in NXP were a continuation of what he did in Philips. In
this period he also joined the training for the European patent attorney
qualification.
Steven joined DeltaPatents on the 1st of January 2007. Within
DeltaPatents he specializes in the fields of semiconductor technology,
and in particular embedded memory technology and interconnect
technology.
His activities include patent creation, prosecution, and exploitation.
Currently Steven is striving to pass the European Qualifying Examination
to become a European Patent Attorney.
